Out-of-School Time Impact Report: A Sharp Insight Case Study

Helping a County Agency Share its Impact

A Sharp Insight Case Study

special thanks to the Montgomery County Recreation Department in Maryland

Partnering with Sharp Insight to develop the “Out of School Time Report” allowed our department the opportunity to work with data professionals who took our vision, reflections, and data and developed it into a piece that will be used to tell our story to a variety of audiences for many years to come.
— Marhonda Y. Williams, CPRP Manager, Montgomery County Recreation Youth Development

  • Two years after COVID-19 first closed school buildings and community centers, the Montgomery County Recreation Department found itself with a lot of data, but little time to analyze and share it. Both prior to and throughout the pandemic, they had gathered data from a range of methods and across population groups. They knew they had an important story to tell. Still, given the ongoing, extensive needs in the community, it was challenging to prioritize data sharing over the provision of essential services.

  • In the spring of 2022, the Montgomery County Recreation Department contacted Sharp Insight.  The Recreation Department needed help reviewing their data, connecting findings to the literature, and creating a product to help them share their impact more broadly.   And so our work together began!

  • At Sharp Insight, we centered the work around our values, specifically those of strong partnerships, equitable evaluation, and meaningful results.

    • We worked closely with the Recreation Department leadership and staff, enabling them to guide the process each step of the way.

    • We analyzed, themed, and visualized findings, highlighting the Recreation Department’s work across diverse communities throughout the county.

    • We customized reporting, uniquely branded to the colors, style, and photos of the Recreation Department.

    • We focused on the difference that the Recreation Department makes in our community – for children, teens, young adults, and families.

  • In the summer of 2022, the Montgomery County Recreation Out of School Time Report was released to the public. Through this one document, the Recreation Department shared its impact on children, teens, young adults, and families, which has included gains in academics, social skills, family supports, and the provision of key services. Community level impacts centered on job creation, economic supports, and community connections, among others. Want to read more? Check out the full report!
